Using Common Mode Chokes to Reduce EMI/RFI in Offline Switching Power Supplies
This white paper explains how Common Mode Chokes (CMCs) help reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI) in off-line switched-mode power supplies (SMPS). As higher switching frequencies improve efficiency and reduce size, they also increase conducted and radiated noise, creating compliance challenges. CMCs effectively attenuate common-mode noise by presenting high impedance to high-frequency interference while allowing normal differential currents to pass with minimal loss. The paper compares CMCs with alternative filtering methods and highlights their advantages in cost, design simplicity, safety compliance, and performance. Proper CMC selection enables reliable EMI suppression and helps meet FCC and CISPR regulatory requirements.
