The ISI mark is the mandatory certification mark for certain products sold in the Indian market, signifying conformance to Indian Standards (IS) developed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). It applies to both domestically manufactured and imported goods. The ISI mark ensures that the product meets essential quality, safety, and performance benchmarks set for that category. 

It is one of the oldest quality marks in India and is mandatory for over 350+ product categories, including electrical appliances, cement, pressure cookers, steel products, and more.

Certification Process 

1. Application through the BIS portal 
2. Product testing at a designated lab 
3. Factory inspection by a BIS officer 
4. Grant of license to use the ISI mark

• IS 302 (Part 1) – Safety of household electrical appliances 
• IS 616 – Audio and video electronic equipment 
• IS 4151 – Protective helmets for two-wheeler riders

Additional Notes 

• Products under mandatory certification cannot be sold in India without the ISI mark
• Foreign manufacturers must appoint an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) and apply under the Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme (FMCS)
• BIS also operates the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) for electronics, which uses a different mark (not ISI)
