SGS Adds Manchester Testing Laboratory to Support UK and Global Product Certification

SGS has introduced a new UKAS-accredited testing facility in Manchester, UK, expanding its hardlines and electrical and electronic (E&E) testing and certification capabilities. The new laboratory strengthens SGS’s compliance services for businesses seeking to meet UK and international regulatory requirements.

The Manchester facility supports consumer product manufacturers and retailers by providing testing and certification services aligned with UK and global standards. According to SGS, the expansion reflects its ongoing focus on delivering efficient, globally recognized compliance solutions.

Strategically located in Northwest England, the facility is designed to offer accelerated testing cycles to reduce time-to-market, improved regional access for clients, and direct integration with SGS’s global network of technical experts. The new laboratory is intended to support businesses operating in the UK as they navigate increasingly complex compliance requirements across competitive markets. The Manchester laboratory was established in November 2025.

Products and Testing Scope

The facility provides testing and certification services for both connectivity and hardline clients.

Connectivity testing includes:

• Electrical and electronic products such as household appliances, consumer electronics, scientific equipment, professional audio-visual technology, lighting, automotive accessories, and power tools
• Healthcare products, including home healthcare and hospital medical devices
• Energy solutions such as power supplies, wireless chargers, EV chargers, and ground source heat pumps
• Connected technologies, including Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, radio frequency (RF), cellular and IoT devices, and smart home products

Hardlines testing includes:

• Children’s products, including toys, juvenile products, and outdoor play equipment
• Technical and supply chain solutions such as packaging, food contact materials, flammability, and brand protection
• Home and leisure products, including furniture, DIY tools, sporting goods, jewelry, cookware, pet supplies, stationery, and lighters
• Health and safety products, including personal protective equipment (PPE)

Key Services

SGS offers end-to-end solutions covering product safety, quality, and sustainability, from raw materials through retail distribution. Services provided at the Manchester facility include physical and mechanical testing, product certification, product safety testing, and inspections covering raw materials, production checks, random inspections, claims verification, and retail store audits.

The laboratory also delivers chemical testing services, including heavy metals analysis, PFAS, REACH/POPs, RoHS, CPSIA, Proposition 65, environmental compliance, recyclability, recycled content verification, and plastic material analysis. Additional capabilities include electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing, wireless testing for technologies such as 5G, Bluetooth, RED, GCF, NFC, OTA, and Wi-Fi, as well as cybersecurity evaluations.

Product safety assessments, including risk analysis, toy safety, and GPSR compliance, are supported alongside technical reviews covering product labeling, safety documentation, technical files, US Children’s Product Certificates (CPC), and Amazon Direct Validation.
