ESA Completes EMC Test for Young Professionals Satellite Ahead of Ariane 6 Launch

ESA Completes EMC Test for Young Professionals Satellite Ahead of Ariane 6 Launch712370

ESA launched YPSat-1 has completed its EMC testing phase! Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) testing stands as a critical checkpoint in the development of a spacecraft. As YPSat-1 is operational during the launch phase of the Ariane 6, this test is especially important, as it proves that YPSat-1 is not causing interference to the launcher during the maiden flight.

The EMC test assesses whether the spacecraft, with all its electronic components, can operate reliably in space. It focuses on electromagnetic emissions and immunity, meaning YPSat-1's ability to operate properly in the presence of interference. All tests were performed at ESTEC’s EMC Laboratory, a special test chamber that can simulate all these exposure scenarios at different frequencies.

“The tests confirmed that YPSat-1’s electronic components can operate reliably in the harsh electromagnetic environment of space. YPSat-1 demonstrated compliance with regulatory standards regarding electromagnetic emissions, ensuring that it won't interfere with Ariane 6 during its launch. This successful outcome of the EMC testing phase is crucial for the mission's continuation as it brings us one step closer to launch.” Daniel Wischert, Systems Engineer for YPSat-1.

At the end of 2023, YPSat-1 underwent a series of first EMC tests campaign, which highlighted that improvements could be made. Following this outcome, YPSat-1 was slightly modified and its design improved. During the second and final EMC test campaign in March 2024, YPSat-1 was fully compliant with the requirements set by Arianespace. The EMC testing phase is a tremendous success for the team. It affirms YPSat-1's readiness for launch on Ariane 6.

“I am extremely proud to have been part of the YPSat-1 team for close to 2 years now – it’s been intense at times, but overall working on YPSat-1 has been a fantastic learning journey I’d choose again without hesitation.” – Daniel Wischert.

In conclusion, the EMC testing phase not only guarantees the compliance of YPSat-1, but it also brings the team one step closer to launching the payload on Ariane 6. It also offers valuable insights, both technically and managerially, that can be applied across a broad range of ESA projects in the future.
