Radiated Emission Testing

Radiated emissions testing is a key component of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) compliance used to evaluate the electromagnetic fields emitted by electronic equipment during operation. Electronic circuits, switching power supplies, digital processors, and high-speed interfaces can generate unintended RF energy that may radiate from cables, enclosures, or PCB structures. This testing ensures that the device under test (DUT) does not exceed regulatory emission limits that could interfere with other electronic systems.

During testing, the DUT is operated in a controlled EMC environment while radiated electromagnetic fields are measured using calibrated EMI receivers and broadband antennas. Measurements are typically performed over a defined frequency range, commonly from 30 MHz to 1 GHz or higher, depending on the applicable standard. The equipment is usually placed on a non-conductive turntable, allowing measurements to be taken at different orientations to identify maximum emission levels.

Radiated emissions testing is conducted according to internationally recognized standards such as CISPR 11, CISPR 32, and FCC Part 15, which define emission limits and measurement procedures for different types of electronic equipment. Additional requirements may be specified by product-specific standards including EN 50121 for railway systems, IEC 60601-1-2 for medical devices, and MIL-STD-461 for military electronics.

These tests are typically performed in semi-anechoic chambers, open area test sites (OATS), or fully anechoic chambers to minimize external interference and ensure accurate measurements. Radiated emissions testing helps manufacturers identify sources of electromagnetic radiation, implement effective shielding or filtering techniques, and demonstrate compliance with EMC regulatory requirements before product deployment.
