Harmonic and flicker testing is performed to evaluate how electrical equipment affects the quality and stability of the AC power supply network. Many electronic devices, particularly those using switch-mode power supplies, motor drives, inverters, and rectifiers, draw non-linear currents that can introduce harmonic distortion into the power system. Excessive harmonics can lead to overheating of electrical equipment, reduced system efficiency, and interference with other connected devices.
Harmonic testing measures the magnitude of individual harmonic currents generated by the device under test (DUT) relative to the fundamental supply frequency. These measurements are typically performed using power analyzers or harmonic analyzers connected to the equipment through standardized test setups that replicate typical power network conditions.
Flicker testing evaluates short-term and long-term voltage fluctuations caused by equipment with varying load currents. Rapid changes in current consumption can cause visible light intensity variations in lighting systems, commonly referred to as flicker. During testing, specialized flicker meters measure voltage fluctuations and calculate parameters such as short-term flicker severity (Pst) and long-term flicker severity (Plt).
Harmonic and flicker testing is typically conducted according to IEC 61000-3-2 for harmonic current emissions and IEC 61000-3-3 for voltage fluctuations and flicker in equipment connected to low-voltage public power networks. These tests ensure that electrical products comply with power quality regulations and do not introduce unacceptable disturbances into the electrical supply system.
