Bulk Current Injection (BCI) testing is an EMC immunity test used to evaluate how electronic systems respond to RF disturbances coupled onto cables and interconnecting harnesses. In complex electronic systems, cables can act as unintended antennas that pick up electromagnetic energy from nearby transmitters, radar systems, or high-power RF sources. BCI testing helps determine whether these disturbances can affect the performance of the device under test (DUT).
During testing, RF currents are intentionally injected into the DUT’s cables using a BCI current injection probe driven by an RF signal generator and power amplifier. The injected current is monitored using a current monitoring probe to ensure that the required disturbance levels are applied across the specified frequency range. The DUT is continuously monitored to detect functional degradation or susceptibility to the injected RF energy.
BCI testing is widely used in industries with complex wiring systems, particularly in automotive and defense electronics. The test is commonly performed according to standards such as ISO 11452-4 for automotive electronics and MIL-STD-461 CS114 for military equipment, which define the frequency ranges, current injection levels, and test procedures.
These tests help engineers identify susceptibility paths within cable harnesses, connectors, and system interfaces. BCI testing supports the development of robust EMC designs through improved shielding, grounding strategies, cable routing, and filtering techniques, ensuring reliable system operation in RF-intensive environments.
