Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Testing

Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) testing is performed to evaluate the immunity of electronic equipment to high-voltage electrostatic events caused by charge accumulation on people, tools, or nearby objects. When this stored charge is suddenly released, it can produce fast transient currents and high electric fields capable of disturbing or damaging sensitive electronic circuits. ESD testing ensures that the device under test (DUT) maintains acceptable performance when subjected to such transient disturbances.

During testing, controlled electrostatic pulses are generated using a calibrated ESD simulator (ESD gun) that reproduces the standardized discharge waveform. Discharges are applied using both contact discharge and air discharge methods to accessible conductive surfaces, connectors, control interfaces, and enclosure points of the DUT. The test waveform typically has a rise time of approximately 0.7-1 ns and peak currents corresponding to test voltages ranging from ±2 kV to ±15 kV, depending on the required severity level.

ESD immunity testing is most commonly performed in accordance with IEC 61000-4-2, which defines the test setup, waveform characteristics, discharge network, and test procedures for evaluating immunity to electrostatic discharges. Additional product-specific standards, such as IEC 60601-1-2 for medical devices, CISPR 35, EN 50121 for railway electronics, and MIL-STD-461 CS118, may also specify ESD requirements depending on the application environment.

Testing is typically conducted on a horizontal coupling plane (HCP) and vertical coupling plane (VCP) to simulate indirect discharges that can couple into nearby equipment. During the test, the DUT is continuously monitored to detect functional degradation, temporary performance loss, or permanent damage. ESD testing helps engineers evaluate protection techniques such as grounding, shielding, transient voltage suppressors (TVS), and PCB layout strategies, ensuring that electronic products meet EMC immunity requirements and operate reliably in electrostatic environments.
